How to Prepare for NYSC Camp & Requirements for Registration
How to prepare for NYSC Camp: So your call up letter is out, your state of deployment has been confirmed, and now the reality is starting to set in. You are actually going to camp. For a lot of prospective corps members, this is the moment the nerves kick in, and understandably so. Camp is a completely new environment and if you have never experienced anything like it before, you are probably full of questions.
This post covers everything you need to know about the NYSC orientation camp, how to prepare for it, what to bring, and what to expect once you walk through those gates. Read it from start to finish before you start packing.
What is the NYSC Orientation Camp?
The NYSC orientation camp is a compulsory three-week programme that every mobilized corps member must attend at the beginning of their service year. It is the first phase of the NYSC programme and it takes place across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory simultaneously for each batch and stream.
The orientation camp is designed to prepare you mentally, physically, and socially for your service year. During those 21 days, you will go through paramilitary drills, skill acquisition programmes, lectures, medical screenings, and social activities. You will also receive your NYSC kit, get your Place of Primary Assignment, and meet hundreds of fellow corps members from different parts of the country.
The 21st day is your last day in camp. That is the day you leave for your PPA.
How to Prepare for NYSC Camp
Preparation is everything. Corps members who arrive at camp prepared settle in faster, experience less stress, and enjoy the three weeks far more than those who show up without a plan. Here is how to get ready before you travel:
1. Find Travel Companions Early
If you have been posted to a state far from home, start looking for fellow corps members heading in the same direction as soon as your state of deployment is confirmed. Traveling with people going to the same camp makes the journey more comfortable, safer, and less lonely. Your batch WhatsApp group or Telegram group is the best place to find travel companions.
2. Buy Your NYSC Kit Before You Travel
You will be given NYSC kits at camp including white shirts, shorts, and shoes, but here is the honest truth about them. The quality is not great. The stitching is often poor, the fit is inconsistent, and for plus size corps members, the camp-issued sizes may not work at all.
Buy at least two or three extra white T-shirts and shorts before you leave home. Prices for NYSC items tend to increase once the mobilization news is out, so buy early to avoid paying more. A good pair of white rubber tennis shoes is also worth having because the ones given at camp can wear out quickly, especially with the daily drills.
3. Sort Out Your Documents Well in Advance
This is not something to handle the night before you travel. Gather all your documents early, arrange them neatly in a file, and make at least four photocopies of each item. Missing a document at the camp gate is one of the most avoidable sources of stress in camp.
4. Travel Early
Do not try to arrive on the last day of the reporting window. If you have been posted to a far state, travel the day before camp opens if you can. Late arrivals face longer registration queues, fewer bed options, and a generally more stressful first few days. Give yourself a head start.
5. Avoid Night Travel
This cannot be stressed enough. Complete your journey before evening or stop over somewhere safe if you cannot finish before dark. No camp date is worth putting your safety at risk.

Other Useful Items
- Power bank with good battery capacity
- Padlock for your locker
- Two plastic buckets. You can buy these at the Mami market inside camp to avoid carrying them on the journey
- Provisions and snacks for the first few days
- Enough cash for personal expenses. ATM access in camp is unreliable, so withdraw before you travel
- Stapler, pins, and office glue. These are optional but useful during the registration process
Things to Take to NYSC Camp as a Lady
Beyond the general list above, female corps members have a few additional things to consider:
- Enough sanitary pads or menstrual products for three weeks
- A good moisturizer and sunscreen because the morning drills and outdoor activities can be harsh on the skin
- Light makeup or skincare items if you use them, but keep it minimal
- Extra underwear, at least a week’s worth to reduce how often you need to wash
- A small mirror
- Hair products and a scarf or bonnet for your hair at night
- If you wear glasses, bring a spare pair
- Married women should come with their marital documents if they are reporting in their husband’s state of domicile
What to Expect Inside the NYSC Orientation Camp
Walking through those camp gates for the first time can feel overwhelming. Here is a realistic picture of what awaits you:
At the Gate
Your bags will be searched thoroughly at the entrance. Prohibited items including weapons, knives, alcoholic beverages, and certain electrical appliances will be confiscated. Follow instructions, stay calm, and cooperate with the officials.
Registration
The first registration is usually for hostel bed space allocation. You will be given tags to identify yourself and your bunk. Do not lose your tags because you will need them to collect your foam mattress. Other registration stages follow, including document verification, medical screening, and kit collection.
Your NYSC Kit
During registration, you will receive your NYSC kit which includes shirts, shorts, and shoes. Once you get them, use a permanent marker to write your Code Number on each item. Your Code Number is your temporary identity in camp. Without it, you cannot access free meals at the camp dining hall.
The Daily Schedule
If you are the type that wakes up late, camp will be a significant adjustment. A trumpet sounds at 4am and everyone is expected to be at the parade ground by 4:30am for morning assembly. Prayers and worship for different religions are observed, after which the day’s activities begin.
Breakfast is at 7am, followed by fitness drills and Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programmes. Lunch comes after, then a rest period, evening parade, and dinner. This routine runs every day for the 21 days.
Your Allowance
Your first monthly allowance of N77,000 is paid in cash at camp. You will also receive a bicycle allowance. Spend wisely because camp has its own expenses and the Mami market is always open and tempting.
Your PPA Letter
Before you leave camp on the 21st day, you will be given your Place of Primary Assignment. Most corps members get posted to primary or secondary schools. Others get placed in government offices, hospitals, or other organizations. Whatever you get, receive it with an open mind. The PPA situation can often be changed through redeployment after camp if you have valid reasons.
Clearance
Every month throughout your service year starts with monthly clearance at your LGA secretariat. This is how NYSC confirms you are still actively serving. Skipping it means no allowance for that month and multiple skips can result in an extension of your service year. Take it seriously from day one.
Camp is three weeks. It is not forever. Go in with the right attitude, the right documents, and the right items in your bag and you will walk out the other side a lot more ready for your service year than you were going in.
NYSC Camp Requirements for Married Women
The NYSC mobilization process is the same for every graduate, but if you are a married female corps member, there are some additional provisions made specifically for you that are worth knowing before you start your registration.
NYSC recognizes that asking a married woman to serve in a state far from her husband is not always practical, and so the system makes room for what is called concessional deployment. This allows you to request posting to the state where your husband currently resides.
NYSC Registration Requirements for Married Women
During your online registration on the NYSC portal, you will need to indicate your marital status. Do not skip this step or fill it in casually. It is what triggers the option to submit your marital documents and begin the concessional deployment process.
The documents you are required to upload during registration are:
- National Identification Number (NIN)
- Marriage Certificate or Court Affidavit
- Newspaper Change of Name publication
- Husband’s valid ID card, which can be a National ID, Voter’s Card, or Driver’s License
- Husband’s Domicile or Local Government Identification Letter
- Utility bill or husband’s employment letter showing his current address
- O’Level result such as WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB
Before you upload any of these documents, make sure they are scanned clearly. Blurry or cropped uploads are one of the most common reasons applications get delayed or rejected. Take your time and get clean scans of every document before submitting.
Concessional Posting for Married Women
Once your marital documents have been submitted, NYSC will review them and consider your request for concessional posting to your husband’s state of residence. To support your application, the following documents are specifically required for the concessional posting request:
- Marriage certificate
- Husband’s employment letter
- Proof of residence such as a utility bill
- A photocopy of your NYSC call up letter
- A letter of request addressed to NYSC
After submission, your portal may display a message that reads “Concessional Deployment Approval: Pending.” That is completely normal and it just means your documents are still being reviewed. In most cases, approval comes through before camp opens, so you do not need to panic when you see that status.
What If You Are Posted to the Wrong State?
This is something that happens more often than it should. You uploaded all the right documents, followed every step, and then your call up letter drops and you have been posted to a completely different state from where your husband lives.
First, do not panic. It is a fixable situation.
Here is what to do:
Report to the orientation camp in the state you prefer, which is your husband’s state of residence, rather than the state on your call up letter
When you arrive at camp, submit your marriage documents and marital supporting documents to the camp officials for verification
Follow up consistently with the relevant officials during the registration process
Wait for your call up letter to be updated accordingly
These situations are usually resolved once your documents have been verified at camp. The key is to stay calm, be polite with officials, and make sure you have every required document with you in both original and photocopy form.
Going to camp without your marital documents and then trying to sort it out later is where most people run into trouble. Carry everything with you from day one and you will have a much smoother experience.
